AP Thailand joins forces with Mahidol University introducing ‘Toward a Sustainable Future’ to elevate Thailand’s real estate industry Building on the ‘Pocket Forest’ concept to foster urban biodiversity for sustainable living quality
– AP Thailand, under its promise of Cheevit Dee Dee Tee Lueak Eng Dai, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Mahidol University to advance the “Toward a Sustainable Future” concept. The collaboration aims to develop residential spaces while fostering environmental and ecological balance, enhancing biodiversity to support long-term urban growth and deliver sustainable quality of life
– The collaboration builds on the ‘Pocket Forest’ initiative to create and expand biodiversity, while establishing green infrastructure that prioritises plant selection based on international principles and the development of ecosystems where people, cities, insects and nature can coexist in balance
– The initiative will develop green space design approaches for biodiversity through three key principles: Design for Ecosystem, Multi-tiered Planting and Urban Fit & Native Resilient. These principles are intended to ensure that green spaces can “function effectively” in reducing pollution, improving the microclimate and supporting urban ecosystems. The initiative will be piloted at the low-rise project THE CITY Bangna 3

Beyond creating “Green Spaces”: designing a “Living Ecology”
The outcome of this collaboration will help further develop the ‘Pocket Forest’ initiative, a prototype for elevating green spaces from aesthetic landscaping into practical Green Infrastructure within AP’s residential projects. Through the concept of Ecological Landscape Design, we are committed to creating a new balance within communal areas, enabling residents to make full use of these spaces while contributing to the sustainable restoration of urban ecosystems through three biodiversity-focused design approaches.
3 Green space design approaches for biodiversity
1. Design for Ecosystem
Designing green spaces that can genuinely function as and support an ecosystem, rather than serving merely as attractive scenery. These ecological green spaces will act as the project’s lungs, helping to reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect, capture PM2.5 dust particles, store carbon, and promote well-being, while connecting residents with nature in their everyday lives.
2. Multi-tiered Planting
Arranging plants to replicate the structure of a natural forest through multiple height layers, from ground cover, shrubs and climbers to large trees with distinctive characteristics in terms of form, colour and fragrance. The complexity of these planting layers will serve as both a food source and shelter, helping to attract a variety of birds and pollinating insects back into the city, while also functioning as an ecological corridor.
3. Urban Fit & Native Resilient
Selecting native plants, fragrant Thai flowers or species with colours that naturally change with the seasons. These plants are highly disease-resistant, resilient to urban conditions, and have safe root systems that do not damage engineering structures, whether along roadsides, in condominiums or in rooftop gardens. This approach helps create a self-sustaining ecosystem while reducing the burden of long-term landscape management.
